Wheat Board Could Face Big Changes
(January 27, 2004 - CP) The
president of the Canadian Wheat Board has ordered all 500 workers to a
meeting Tuesday about the future.
Adrian Measner called the meeting to announce the results of an
extensive internal corporate review he ordered last year.
Board spokeswoman Dianna Allen would not confirm or deny rumours that
100 of the 500 workers in Winnipeg could lose their jobs.
The wheat board employs another 85 people in regional offices in
Saskatchewan, Alberta, Vancouver and two offices overseas.
Senior wheat board officials were not available for comment.
The wheat board has had a harrowing year since Measner ordered the
review.
It ended up paying farmers $85.4 million more than it got for selling
their wheat.
The federal government guarantees any shortfall by the wheat board.
Allen says whatever is announced is due to the review, not the deficit. |
