Wheat Board Claims "Misinformation" in Alberta

(April 28, 2004 - FFJ)  The Canadian Wheat Board is challenging the Alberta government over who can market prairie wheat abroad.

The chair of the wheat board, Ken Ritter, announced a publicity campaign in Calgary to counter what he calls "misinformation about the board.

The Alberta government has introduced legislation that allows farmers to market their wheat without going through the wheat board. But Ritter says that doesn't mean farmers will be able to bypass the board.

"In our view they should test this legislation before it proceeds," says Ritter.

"The view of our legal department is that this is not within provincial jurisdiction to have this kind of legislation."

Ritter says the wheat board will not take any legal action against the Alberta government, but he expects the federal government will keep a close eye on the issue.
