Wheat Board Adopts Penny Ante Tactics
(June 25, 2004 - FFJ) No matter how you slice it, this cheque is worth a
pretty penny.
Ruby Schierman was excited when she saw that she was getting a cheque
from the Canadian Wheat Board, and like anyone would, she started planning
where the money would go.
But when she opened the envelope, she was surprised to see that it was
made out for a whopping one cent.
"I thought they forgot to put the zeros and decimals in the right
place," said Schierman.
"I rubbed my eyes, but sure enough the amount was $0.01."
CWB spokeswoman Louise Waldman says that this particular problem comes
up due to the automated system that issues cheques.
The computers are unable to decipher the worth of the figure on the
cheque, they only calculate it, and it must be paid out.
"If we withhold even a penny, we are in breach of the law,"
said Waldman. |
