Farmers to meet at Alberta’s Legislature Building in Support of an
Open Market
(April 16, 2004 - WBGA) Representatives from the Western
Barley Growers Association (WBGA) will be meeting at the Alberta
Legislature this Monday, April 19, to show their support for Calgary
Mountain View MLA, Mark Hlady's private members bill to amend the Alberta
Wheat and Barley Test Open Market Act.
"This amendment does not challenge the Federal Canadian Wheat
Board Act", says Doug McBain, President of the WBGA," it would
simply apply the same Canadian Wheat Board (CWB) policy to Alberta that is
applied to all areas outside the prairies" added McBain.
This amendment is intended to give Alberta Wheat and Barley producers
and processors the marketing and value adding opportunities that CWB
policies gives to the rest of the country, outside the prairies.
"Debate on the second reading of the Bill has not started",
says McBain, regretfully. "We are here to show our support before we
get too involved with our spring field work. I hope to be back to see the
vote pass second reading before this session ends", concludes McBain.
To join the WBGA and producers please call your MLA or Mark Hlady's
office (780/422-5380) to arrange a security pass and reserve a ticket to
Legislature for Monday the 19th. The session begins precisely at 1:30 p.m.
It is recommended that open market supporters be in the building by 1:00
p.m.
The WBGA and producers will meet after question period in front of the
Legislature Building at 2:45 p.m. |
