Calgary-Mountain View MLA, Mark Hlady, Introduces Second Reading for Wheat and Barley Test Open Market

(May 5, 2004 - WBGA)  "I am absolutely delighted that the amendment to the test open market act has been introduced into second reading for debate", said Doug McBain, President of the Western Barley Growers Association, from his home near Cremona.  "Now, more than ever, it is possible that the crop I am planting could be the first to be harvested and sold on the open market in three generations", declares McBain.  "That will be great day!"

The amendment to the Alberta Wheat and Barley Test Open Market will force the Canadian government to deal with the unequal administration of the Canadian Wheat Board Act by the CWB board of directors.  The underlying issue with the CWB is the denying of export licences to prairie farmers while granting them to farmers in the rest of Canada.  This in one Act with two administration policies.  "The lack of a single licencing policy has to be addressed by the Federal government", concludes McBain.
