Farmers for Justice
says 'Don't take it for granted'
(November 12, 2002 - FFJ) -- Bill
Moore, John Turcato, Ron Duffy and Jim Chateney battle boredom compared
to farmer’s full days of activities and planning.
They do jail time optional duties to shorten the days of sentence
and to fill the long days.
These men are thinking
about the farmers preparing for their Court of Queen’s Bench Appeal on
November 18th and 19th in Regina on the same
charges as in Alberta – exporting without a license, failure to report
in writing and not placing vehicles into the custody of customs
officers.
Manitoba has 63 men
charged, Saskatchewan 123 farmers in 8 separate incidents, and Alberta
had a total of 31 charged in April & July’s 1996 protests.
There was one Alberta farmer who had his charges stayed, a native
farmer who received an absolute discharge doing the exact same thing in
the fall of 1996.
Amidst all of this,
the odd number districts of the CWB are holding elections for farmer
elected district directors, pitting candidates expected to push for
choice to market their grain against the incumbent candidates and others
pushing to keep the CWB status quo.
At this time of year
FFJ urges Canadians to remember the men and women of Canada who died for
the rights and liberties of us all, and to never take those rights and
freedoms for granted. That
is why the four Alberta farmers sit in the Lethbridge Correctional
Institute today.
