Grain Export Officials Charged

(October 27, 2003 - AgriWeek)    Eight people, including a high official of the European Commission involved in establishing grain export subsidy rates, were arrested last week in connection with a possible bribery scam.

Police were looking into allegations that sensitive, confidential information was passed to grain companies in advance of public release, in exchange for the transfer of funds into private numbered bank accounts.

The investigation involved 150 police officers in five countries and started two years ago.
